New crops from the Americas improved the diet of Europeans and therefore their health, which led to a population boom and a large number of young people whose vitality contributed to the Industrial Revolution. To gro w these new crops more efficiently, rich landowners enclosed the land, thus driving peasants into the cities and increasing the urban population. The increase in the urban population also contributed to the Industrial Revolution, creating a new pool of job-seekers who would provide the labor force large scale manufacturing required. Students could also note that the industrial revolution transformed agriculture in many ways across the globe.  The rise of cotton as a cash-crop in such places as the United States and Egypt is one example of how this transformation occurred: in the American case, it led to an even greater reliance on slave labor, and the emergence of a symbiotic relationship between the plantations of the slave-owning South and the free-labor textile mills of the north; in Egypt, it led to the country's transformation into a colonial dependency and captive market for British cloth. Both the agricultural and industrial revolutions radically changed the average farmer's life and also the rural landscape.
